'The Locust Years'

Suppose we had also been able to foresee the degeneration of the foreign situation, our quarrel with Italy, the Italo-German association, the Belgian declaration about neutrality - which, if the worst interpretation of it proves to be true, so greatly affects the security of this country - and the disarray of the smaller Powers of Central Europe. Suppose all that had been forecast - why, no one would have believed in the truth of such a nightmare tale. Yet just two years have gone by and we see it all in broad daylight. Where shall we be this time two years? I hesitate now to predict.

That this Conference desires to record its grave anxiety in regard to the inadequacy of the provisions made for Imperial Defence.

Simon Lancaster
There are a number of ways that an orator can establish a rapport with an audience or win their approval if you like and one of the first and easiest ways is flattery that no one ever objects to being told that they are brilliant.

“I know that you didn’t do this for me. You did this because you believed in the most American of ideas that in the face of impossible odds people who love this country can change it.''

Simon Lancaster
Also empathy is just very important showing that you feel what the audience feels or you understand what the audience understands. And also it's very important just having some common ground with the audience. I think Barack Obama is the King and his trick was not necessarily that he was agreeing with everyone. It was creating the impression that he was agreeing with everyone. And he did that by creating such deliberately blank phrases that anyone could interpret into them whatever they wanted to.

You may not be the president of the United States or even president of your company. You may not have won any awards or public recognition. And few people outside your circle of acquaintances may know your name. But you have to be the best you you can be.

You are the message. And everything about you – your experience, passion, character, and even your sense of humor – shapes how your listeners hear what you say

APPLICATION : You can adapt what your say – changing emphasis here and there, substituting examples or stories when appropriate – to better address the needs and concerns of different audiences. But you have to be yourself because you can’t be anyone else anyway. Let your true self – your best self – come through in what you talk about and in how you talk about it.

Anyone who has ever viewed the motion picture PATTON will never forget the opening. George Campbell Scott, portraying Patton, standing in front of an immensely huge American flag, delivers his version of Patton's "Speech to the Third Army" on June 5th, 1944, the eve of the Allied invasion of France, code-named "Overlord".

Scott's rendition of the speech was highly sanitized so as not to offend too many fainthearted Americans. Luckily, the soldiers of the American Army who fought World War II were not so fainthearted.

After one of my lectures on the subject of General Patton, I spoke with a retired Major-General who was a close friend of Patton and who had been stationed with him in the 1930's in the Cavalry. He explained to me that the movie was a very good portrayal of Patton in that it was the way he wanted his men and the public to see him, as a rugged, colorful commander. There was one exception, however, according to the Major General. In reality, Patton was a much more profane speaker than the movie dared to exhibit.
