Customizing your desktop icons isn't strictly a time waster. Take, for example, your most-used folders. Custom icons allow you to quickly identify those folders so you can quickly pick them out from all the other folders on your desktop. That's why your Home folder and Trash—both folders—have their own special icons. You could pay $30 for the privilege of easily changing icons, or you could do it for free, no app required. Here's how to customize your Mac's icons, for free, in just a couple simple steps.

That's all there is to it! It couldn't be easier, and it works on folders, apps, and any other icon you want to customize. As I mentioned in the video, I particularly like doing this for oft-used folders so I can see at-a-glance which is which without having to read. I can identify an image more quickly than I can parse all the text—it's the same reason why OS X ships with custom icons for your Trash and Home folder, both of which are just folders like any other.

In addition to the suggestions that ManSinha made, it is also possible to restrict certain apps which would make the apps disappear from the screen. Safari, FacetIme, iTunes the App Store and News can all be restricted which will hide the icons. Settings>General>Restrictions is where you can check aNed make sure they are not restricted.

Apps can also be placed in folders and you may have done so and forgot about it or did it accidentally. To find those apps, do a Spotlight Serach for them. Swipe down from the middle of any home screen to enable the search feature. Type the name of the app in the search field. When it appears in the search, the name of the folder in which it resides will appear to the right of the app name,

The native apps cannot be deleted, they are there somewhere. If the folders contained non-native apps and they were deleted, you will have to redownload them. To create new folders, press and hold an app like you are going to delete it but instead of clicking on the x move it into another app. A new folder will be created which you can name as you wish.

It was all going well until I got here C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned

but in the user pinned folder I don't have a Start Menu folder - I only have ImplicitAppShortcuts (which is empty) and TaskBar folders. Does anyone know where this StartMenu folder might be?
